In 2012 we created The Pearl of Doha for an audience in Qatar who preferred not to have a murder, but still wanted a mystery. Before natural gas was discovered Doha in Qatar was a fishing village, where some of the world's finest pearls could be found. Since then we have run several robberies instead of murders.
The principal is essentially the same. With a murder mystery the audience is trying to establish Method, Motive, and Murderer. With a robbery it's Alibi, Access, and Accused (if alliteration is the goal!). We will choose an item of jewellery, or any other high value asset. For a company, for example, it could be a file containing new product details. We position suspects within the event, so they might be newly recruited waiters, a security guard 'in the know', or a dancer cum cat burglar. All will have interesting histories that may link them to the crime. A detective arrives and locks down the building for the investigation. Usually it lasts for two hours or so, a typical attention span. The event can be staged as a surprise for the guests.
