What is The Devil's Punchbowl? 

The Devil’s Punchbowl is a large natural amphitheater and beauty spot in Surrey, England, near Hindhead. It’s a 282 hectare Site of Special Scientific Interest managed by the National Trust. Formed by erosion, this dramatic hollow features steep, wooded slopes and heathland, offering stunning views and walking trails. Its name stems from local folklore, with tales of the devil scooping out the bowl during a feud with Thor, or leaping from the Punch Bowl to the nearby Devil’s Jumps. Geologically, it’s part of the Wealden greensand, with sandy soils supporting diverse wildlife, including rare birds like the Dartford warbler. Popular for hiking, cycling, and horse riding, it’s accessible via the A3 and draws visitors for its serene yet striking landscape.
