Merseyside Murder Mystery at The Wirral Hundred

We will be at The Wirral Hundred on Friday 28th November with our classic 1920s The Reading of The Will Murder Mystery.

The Wirral Hundred, Merseyside

The Wirral Hundred is a modern pub and carvery nestled in the heart of Noctorum on the Wirral Peninsula, Merseyside. Opened in 2015 by the Farmhouse Inns chain, it occupies a spacious, purpose-built site at 1408 New Chester Road (CH43 7PH), directly opposite Arrowe Park Hospital—making it a go-to spot for NHS staff finishing long shifts, families celebrating birthdays, and locals craving unlimited breakfasts.

The name pays homage to the ancient Wirral Hundred, one of Cheshire’s historic administrative divisions that once covered this exact area in medieval times. The Wirral Hundred was one of the original divisions of Cheshire, covering the peninsula between the River Mersey and the River Dee. The name of the pub pays tribute to that early medieval heritage, linking it to the region’s ancient governance and identity. Inside, the décor cleverly nods to that heritage: exposed beams, rustic brickwork, and walls adorned with vintage maps of the old hundred, alongside quirky touches like a giant fake cow and an in-house bakery where fresh cakes are made daily from 8 am.

Noctorum, where the pub stands today, was once rural farmland and woodland on the edge of Birkenhead. Its name likely derives from Old English roots meaning “North homestead.” During the 19th century, as Birkenhead industrialized and Liverpool expanded across the Mersey, Noctorum evolved into a residential suburb — with larger houses and leafy lanes for merchants and professionals.

Signature offerings include the legendary all-day carvery (roast beef, turkey, gammon, or pork with Yorkshire puddings the size of hubcaps) and the bottomless “Farmhouse Breakfast” stacked with bacon, sausages, eggs, and refillable hash browns. The cake-away counter is infamous—towering Victoria sponges and chocolate fudge cakes that regularly break the internet when locals post photos.

With outdoor seating overlooking manicured lawns, a children’s play area, and regular live music, The Wirral Hundred has become a community hub. Whether you’re nursing a pint of Carling after a Wirral Way walk or demolishing a giant slice of lemon drizzle, it’s the kind of place that feels like home after one visit.
